The Historic Northwest District, formerly known as Progressive Northwest, boasts a rich and storied history that reflects the cultural evolution of West Palm Beach. Established in the early 20th century, this neighborhood became a vibrant center for African American culture and community, thriving during the Jim Crow era when segregation limited opportunities elsewhere. Iconic establishments like the Sunset Lounge served as gathering places for local musicians and artists, while the area fostered a sense of pride and resilience among its residents. Over the decades, the district has weathered economic challenges but has continuously revitalized itself, preserving its historic character and cultural significance. Today, the Historic Northwest District stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of its past, celebrating its heritage while looking forward to a bright future.
In an effort to preserve and consider historic infrastructure and places within future redevelopment initiatives, the CRA in partnership with the City's Preservation Planner, hired consultant Preservation Design Partnership, LLC to identify places of cultural and historical significance in the Historic Northwest neighborhood.
The consultant along with the CRA and city staff have engaged with the community to gather data and present the findings. The final phase will include a formal preservation plan that will include identified sites, proposed preservation methods and implementation goals.
